1. Any port in a storm: Méo mó có hơn không
Ví dụ: That horrible hotel was a case of any port in a storm as we couldn’t find any place to spend the night.
2. At the wheel: Lái xe, điều khiển xe
Ví dụ: You know he fell asleep at the wheel. They were so lucky they didn’t have an accident.
3. Backseat driver:
– Người ngồi sau xe (không cầm lái) nhưng liên tục chỉ đường cho tài xế
– Người mà thích đi khuyên bảo người khác khi họ thực sự chưa làm việc đó bao giờ
Ví dụ: My brother is such a backseat driver. I hate traveling with him.
4. Drive a hard bargain: Mặc cả, cò kè, bớt một thêm hai
Ví dụ: It’s gonna be a tough negotiations with them. They drive a hard bargain.
5. Drive someone up the wall: Làm cho người khác rất bực mình
Ví dụ: Her persistent nagging drove me up the wall.
6. Fall off the back of a lorry: Đồ ăn trộm, ăn cắp, có được một cách phi pháp
Ví dụ: He was trying to sell me a new laptop which I suspect fell off the back of a lorry
7. Fifth wheel: Thứ dư thừa, không cần thiết
Ví dụ: I felt like a fifth wheel when they started looking at each other affectionately.
8. Highways and byways: Tác đường lớn nhỏ (mọi nẻo đường)
Ví dụ: They spent their holiday exploring the highways and byways of the country
9. Hit the road: Bắt đầu đi, khởi hành
– We’ve got a long way to go. Let’s hit the road to make it by sunset.
– It’s time for me to hit the road; it is getting late.
10. Hitch one’s wagon to a star: Theo đuổi đam mê
Ví dụ: He urged his students to hitch their wagons to a star.
11. In the same boat: Cùng chung hoàn cảnh, vấn đề
A: Can you lend me 100 dollars?

12. Itchy feet: Cuồng chân (muốn di chuyển, đi du lịch)
Ví dụ: She has itchy feet again. She says she will travel to Brazil.
13. Jump on the bandwagon: Có lợi từ một trào lưu, tham gia vào hoạt động phổ biến
Ví dụ: After the incredible success of the new product, the company has jumped on the bandwagon, and released a new version of it.
14. Jump the lights: Vượt đèn đỏ
Ví dụ: It’s dangerous to jump the lights. You may have a terrible accident.
15. Make one’s way: Đi về một nơi nào đó, nỗ lực để có cuộc sống tốt
– He made his way to the police station and told all about the murder.
– He had to make his own way in the world as his family was very poor.
16. Miss the boat: Bỏ lỡ mất cơ hội
Ví dụ: The price discount ended yesterday and I just missed the boat on a great deal.
17. My way or the highway: Lối của tôi hay lối xa lộ = Làm theo tôi hoặc biến
Ví dụ: He has a “My way or the highway” approach to leading his government and his party.
18. Off the beaten track: Nơi hẻo lánh, hoang sơ ít người ghé đến
Ví dụ: His trip was altogether off the beaten track which had never been traversed any European.
19. On the wagon: Kiêng rượu bia
Ví dụ: No, thank you! No alcohol for me I am on the wagon.
20. Paddle one’s own canoe: Tự lập, tự mình gánh vác lấy công việc của mình không ỷ lại vào ai
Ví dụ: He’s been left to paddle his own canoe when he started his business.
21. Put the cart before the horse: Làm ngược, làm trái khoáy; lấy kết quả làm nguyên nhân
Ví dụ: To attempt to remove the armaments before removing these substantive conflicts of interest is to put the cart before the horse.
22. Put the pedal to the metal: Nhấn ga hết cỡ, đi nhanh hơn, nỗ lực hết sức
Ví dụ: You have to put the pedal to the metal if you want to get there on time.
23. Road rage: Xe điên, thái độ bực tức nóng giận của người lái xe khi lưu thông trên đường.
Ví dụ: Many road accidents are the result of road rage.
24. Sail through something: Vượt qua một cách dễ dàng
Ví dụ: He sailed right through his homework.
25. Take for a ride: Lừa đảo, đánh lừa
Ví dụ: It was only when he discovered that his wallet was gone that he realized they had taken him for a ride.
26. Trip the light fantastic: Nhảy múa
Ví dụ: We were tripping the light fantastic all night.
27. Wheels fall off: Mọi việc xẩy ra không đúng theo ý muốn
Ví dụ: Our team was doing well for a while, but they got tired and then the wheels fell off.
